Babysitting

Yesterday, I got to babysit my favorite nephew Miles!  I always love seeing him and he was especially charming yesterday.  Here's some of my favorite moments from last night:

1.  Asking Miles about his soon to be born sister.  Miles got so excited talking about his sister! I asked him, "Are you excited to have a sister?" Then Miles said yes, then started smiling and jumping up and down with excitement. Then I asked what her name is and he responded, "Molly!"  It was so adorable!!!

2.  "I have a secret!" Miles will whisper and say "I have a secret".  Then if you ask him what his secret is, he'll whisper again and say "I love (fill in the blank)".  The cutest was when he said I love Mommy and Daddy.

3.  Tangled. Tangled continues to be Miles' favorite movie and he wanted to watch it.  So, it was playing in the background as we did other things. But, sometimes he would sit and watch it.  The cutest part was when "I have a dream" came on.  He started singing along with it. He knew every word!  He was amazing!

4. Taking pictures of just about everything. Miles has a new favorite game. Miles will show me something and say, "Take a picture of (fill-in-the-blank)".  What he didn't realize is that it meant I got to take pictures of my favorite subject at the same time: Miles!  He didn't want me to take any pictures of himself, only the objects in his hands.  But, it worked out pretty well for both of us.

For example, this is a picture of Blankie and Teddy, not Miles.

This picture is of Giraffey.

He's quite a charmer!

He eventually let me take a picture with him

Basically, Miles is the best nephew in the world.  He is the sunshine in my life!  I'm so glad I got to babysit him yesterday and also see Elisabeth and Gerrit.  Elisabeth is my favorite sister, an amazing advice giver, and one of my role models.  Gerrit is my favorite brother-in-law, hilarious, and such a good daddy and husband.  I love seeing my family!

President's Day Weekend

President's day weekend was a much needed 3 day weekend.  But, it is also a scary thought because that means that this semester is about half way over and there's no more days off (eek!).  I guess, that just means it's time to get my nose to the grindstone.  But, anyways......... I got to do some fun stuff this weekend!

Friday

My ward had an open mic night, basically a talent show where you sign up at the door.  It was so much fun!  The acts were fantastic, we have so many talented people in our ward.  Some of my favorites include Michelle's "I need a man", Jayne and Emily's "Break your heart", and Joy's "Rolling in the Deep".  Everyone did a fantastic job!

Also, Becca, Ashley, and I did something as well.  We decided to sing some of our favorite pop songs as Disney/other characters would.  Here they are:

Violet from the Incredibles singing "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls:

My family pretends that we're normal
But my dad calls my mom rubber band
In a family of supers, what's normal?
I just don't think that you'd understand.

And I don't want the world to see me
Cause I'm hiding from big, scary men
My force field's not meant to be broken
I don't want you to know where I am.

Sleeping Beauty singing "Breakeven" by The Script

I'm still alive but I'm deeply sleeping
From a magic needle my finger's bleeding
Cos I got an enemy of my kingdom
Cos when a spindle breaks no it don't break even

What am I supposed to do when my one true love was always you and
What am I supposed to say when I can't even talk and you're away
I'm falling to sleep, yeah
I'm falling to sleep

Lord Voldemort singing "Forget You" by Cee-lo Green

I see you flying round town on your Nimbus 2000
And I'm like "Kill you!" Ooo ooo ooo
I guess the scar on your forehead just wasn't enough
And I'm like "I'll kill him, and I'll kill her too."
They say he's chosen, and I say whatever
Dumb prophecy.
And after all that's been said I still wish you dead
With a "Kill you"

Needless to say, we might have had a bit too much fun with that.

Saturday.

After work Saturday morning, Kensey, Ashley and I went up to Salt Lake to see Brittany in her goalball tournament.  Goalball is a sport designed for people who are blind or visually impaired.  It is really cool and if you ever get the chance to go see it, you should do it.  It's kind of like two teams of goalies chucking a ball at the opposing with bells in it while blindfolded. A better description can be found here, or watching it on youtube also really helps explain it well.  Either way, it was amazing!  Brittany did a fantastic job!  It was also really cool to experience blind culture as I had never really been exposed to it before. Later that night, we had our weekly Star Wars party.  It was a good day!

She's a beast!

Her team won the round we saw!

We had a fantastic time!

Sunday.

We started working on "Remember the Lilies" in choir and it was so beautiful!  It made my morning so much better.  Church was also fantastic and I left feeling so uplifted.  We celebrated Becca's half-birthday (more on that in a different post).  After ward prayer, Joel and his roommates invited me and my extended roommates over to their apartment and we played an awesome game I've never heard of it before.  It's called the game of things or things in a box.  Basically there's a category of things and everyone writes down an answer to it.  Ex. Things that would be weird to write on a résumé.  Then everyone writes their answer to that and you try to figure out who wrote what.  It's a super fun game and I definitely would recommend it.

Monday.

Monday was pretty relaxed.  Work was super slow because of the holiday, but otherwise good.  Other than that, I got some homework done, went on a lovely walk with Joel, and then my FHE group went to the bishop's for FHE.

I have to say, it was a lovely, rather busy long weekend!

A few highlights

Well, there's been lots of things happening recently and I though I'd just give a brief highlight of a few of them:

1)Who knew that computers could have tumors? I definitely didn't.  But, they can!  At least Ashley's did.  We had quite an adventure trying to figure out what happened to her computer and then holding in the battery so she could print out a paper.

2) Watching North and South with Kensey, Shea, and Julia.  North and South is an awesome movie!  I'm so glad I finally got the chance to see it.

3.  A double date with Elisabeth and Gerrit.  It was super fun!  Me and Joel went with Elisabeth and Gerrit to Malawi pizza and got a delicious desert pizza (peanut butter smores pizza).  Then, we went to the Living Legends show.  It was really cool!

4.  I got accepted into the Special Ed program!  On Saturday, I got a letter in the mail and I'm going to be starting the program this fall semester.  I'm so happy and excited!

To see like God....

Last night, my roommate and I were talking about how people treat each other and even themselves.  It really got me thinking.  How often do we use the words, "stupid", "ugly", "normal", "worthless", "not worth it", "okay", "unlikable", "weird", "what's wrong with....", or so many other demeaning phrases to talk about ourselves or someone else we know?  I know I'm guilty of it.  But, if we were to see our neighbors and ourselves like God sees us, how could we dare use such words?  How could we dare to feel like we are worthless?  How could we dare to put down one of His children?

God sees us with all of our potential--He knows what we are capable of us and loves us beyond compare.  Although it's impossible to have such perfect love and knowledge of those around us, we could begin to treat others (and ourselves) like God would.  One of my favorite C.S. Lewis quotes talks about this:

"It is a serious thing to live in a society of possible gods and goddesses, to remember that the dullest and most uninteresting person you can talk to may one day be a creature, which, if you saw it now, you would be strongly tempted to worship, or else a horror and a corruption such as you now meet, if at all, only in a nightmare. All day long we are, in some degree, helping each other to one or the other of these destinations. It is in the light of these overwhelming possibilities, it is with the awe and the circumspection proper to them, that we should conduct all our dealings with one another, all friendships, all loves, all play, all politics. There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations – these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit – immortal horrors or everlasting splendours. This does not mean that we are to be perpetually solemn. We must play. But our merriment must be of that kind (and it is, in fact, the merriest kind) which exists between people who have, from the outset, taken each other seriously – no flippancy, no superiority, no presumption. And our charity much be a real and costly love, with deep feeling for the sins in spite of which we love the sinner – no mere tolerance, or indulgence, which parodies love as flippancy parodies merriment. Next to the Blessed Sacrament itself, your neighbor is the holiest object presented to your senses. If he is your Christian neighbor, he is holy in almost the same way, for in him also Christ vere latitat – the glorifier and the glorified, Glory himself, is truly hidden. " – C.S. Lewis

If we were to keep this in mind, how many problems would that solve?  With this knowledge, why would you lie, cheat, or rob someone else?  Why would you bully, abuse, or otherwise hurt someone?  Why would you consider yourself better or worse than the person sitting next to you?

You wouldn't.

Recently, I've just been seeing a lot of people who have been forgetting that we are all children of God with a divine potential and purpose.  I know lots of people who are overly harsh on themselves and a few who are overly harsh on others.  It's just made me think about how much God loves us and wishes that we saw ourselves and those around us like He does.  I hope that we can.

It's something that me and my roommate are working on right now.  So when I start being negative about myself or someone around me, I'm going to stop and think, "How does God see them?"  I'll let you know how it goes.  Even in these past few hours, it's already making a positive difference in my life.  I can't wait to continue working on it and to see more like God does.
